Xbox 360 vs. PS3

Ok, here's the deal on consoles in 2008. You have three choices, the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PS3. If you didn't know that much, you'd either better stop reading - or really start paying attention and taking notes.
Firstly, I'm not going to talk about the Wii. I understand that there are a lot of titles and that it's really fun to play, but it just isn't a powerhouse in the graphics department.
So for the purpose of this comparison, let's talk real games, realistic driving simulators, first person shooters that actually raise your heartbeat and adrenaline as you are sneaking up on the enemy for the final kill and of course the amazing 3D world of Grand Theft Auto IV.
How do you compare them?
And I really am going to try and be fair about this comparison, so here is my background: About a year ago I succumbed and bought an Xbox 360 with a few games. I hadn't owned a console since the PS2 so I was excited getting back into games. Oh, and it had online capability. It wasn't long before I had found the third (and let me say very addictive) game in the Halo series.
This is easily the Xbox 360's flagship title. It's the reason for having the Xbox at all, the one great game that is solely available to the Microsoft fans (maybe fans is going too far). I logged many, many hours playing Halo 3 - without ever feeling like the game was getting old.
I remember looking at my stats one day, and noticing that I had played over fifty hours worth of Halo 3 online. That's pretty much the moment I realized that online games are the future. That, and I had really wasted a lot of time in my life. I could have learned a new language by now!
Xbox 360's Downfall
But there was one problem with the Xbox 360. I had to pay $7.99 every month for the privilege of playing games online. Sure, it's not a lot of money - on a bad day I will spend that much on cigarettes - but it adds up, and why should I have to pay that. I have bought a console for close to $400, every game has cost me $60. The game developers have their money, Microsoft has their money and for some reason I still have to pay to play the games I enjoy.
So I took a virtual stand against the man. I had been following the rise of the PS3 for a long time. It was, of course, one of my choices when first buying the Xbox - but it always had limited titles, and was a little too expensive.
Why to get the PS3
Until three landmark events.
- The release of the $399 40Gb PS3
- The release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (the preview of the best driving simulator ever made)
- The release of Grand Theft Auto IV
Before you say it, I know GTA IV is available on all consoles, but it still adds one more great game to the PS3's ever growing list.
My Impressions So Far
There is one game that I can use to compare both consoles with (at least in terms of graphics and sound). I played Call Of Duty 4 quite a lot on both consoles, both campaign and multi-player online.
Graphics and sounds. No difference. The game play is the same. I dare anyone to spot the difference in graphics.
But there are reasons why the PS3 is the best in my eyes.
Firstly, the online game lobby's are not crawling with twelve year olds who's life mission it is to pollute the airwaves of games. This may be because the PS3 has a slightly more mature audience, possibly due to higher prices in the past - so I do expect this to change.
Secondly, the controllers on the PS3 are just way more advanced. They are lighter, which makes a difference in the long run. They have the same technology as the Wii, called SixAxis. This allows the control to control certain aspects of games by tilting, pointing downwards, etc. Not every game takes advantage but it is nice to have. The standard controller also plugs straight into the USB port of the PS3 to charge, unlike the Xbox 360 controllers that come with a standard battery pack that needs AA batteries to be replaced every few days. There is the future problem that the battery pack is not user replaceable so when it eventually does fail it will mean a new controller, but the controller functions will probably break down before this happens.
And lastly, online games are free. The Playstation network, unlike Xbox Live is free to sign up on and play. You do still have to pay for additional content, such as new maps or game add-ons, but this is becoming the normal situation across all platforms.
Xbox Live Are Thieves!
For the icing on the cake, if you need one last reason to not buy an Xbox 360, read on. I have been trying to cancel my Xbox 360 monthly subscription for two months. Microsoft does not like this and tries every way possible to stop you from doing so.
They don't allow you to do it online, either on the web or from the console. Even though this is how you enter your credit card details the first time. You have to call support, they say.
Support does not answer the phone before at least twenty minutes has passed. They then pretend that they can't find your account details, and after a little pressing even try and convince you to transfer the account to someone else. Who would I transfer it to? I asked. They huffed and told me it was canceled.
As of yesterday, I am still paying for my subscription. My only last route is to ask my credit card company to deny charges from Microsoft anymore.
Buy the PS3.
Here's the final list of reasons:
- There are three games available right now that will keep you busy for a very long time (no need to worry about the supposed lack of titles anymore). Call of Duty 4, Gran Turismo 5 and Grand Theft Auto IV.
- Blu-Ray. The war is over, Blu-Ray has won. Even if you simply bought the PS3 just for the Blu-Ray player, you are winning. It's fully functional and the picture is amazing.
- Look at the PS3, it's simply pretty.

I'm not sure what you mean by dvd adapter, but it does play DVD's by standard, this is true. There also used to be a HD-DVD drive that you could buy for the Xbox 360.
But the PS3 not only plays normal DVD's, but BluRay discs as well.
Thats what im talking about. I like reading literature from people who know what they're talking about. Microsoft should change their name to the xbox gamethieves or something trying to steal your money. For all of what ps3 offers at least some people like us realize that it is cheaper than the shitbox after you buy all the attachments the ps3 has!

I had a PS3 and ended up selling it on eBay. It simply didn't not have enough of the types of games I wanted to play. I ended up getting the 360 and have not looked back yet.
I also ended up buying my wife a Wii which is actually pretty fun.
In the end, I think I'll buy the PS3 again. There are a few games coming out that are exclusive (Killzone 2) that will cause me to want to get it. It seems rediculous to have 3 systems, but that'll probably be how it plays out for me.
I think the XBox 360 is much better than the PS3. I have a 360 and I love it.

Hey seriously customer service is gonna suck no matter what company you are dealing with, Microsoft or Sony. All the games that are A rated for the PS3 have been released for the Xbox and rated higher including the madden games. So how you feel like your at a real game without their being any shade in an open stadium is beyond me. Maybe light works different in your world. It's an Xbox world Sony is just chasing the tail of Microsoft. Very few innovations and no spectacular exclusive titles for the ps3 make the playstation pretty much worthless.

Dude, you are awesome. PS3's will always be better than XBOX's and there is no question to which one will win the war in the end. The graphics are much better on the PS3 and apparently, if you reconfigure the tech in the PS3, you can play 360 games and PS3 games.

I dont have any problems with the 360 ever since I got it. Microsoft fixed all the problems. Sure xbox live costs money, but its well worth it. Xbox Live > Playstation Network.

My friend at school are always talking about games like COD4. We dont talk about which system is better, we just talk about the games. They have almost the exact same games and exact same graphics. Note the fact that I said "almost" so no one start arguing. They also have the same kind of exclusives...
For example : Gears of War = Killzone
So stop arguing they are both very good game consoles. If they were just game consoles, and only game consoles, they would be almost exactly alike.
I think that the ps3 has more than just great graphics you basically get more for your money and thats the truth yes you have to pay a lot but check me out here you get a blue ray player , you get a play and charge kit, you get a harddrive already in the system that you dont get with all xbox 360's, you get free online play and you dont have sucky netflix movies to rent all the time you have sony blueray movies you can download online onto your hardrive and sonys titles are actually better killzone, god of war, tekken, etc.... and you get all that for what 399 r cheaper even if you go on craigslist
now for the 360 buying it lets see anyway you go you are going to end up spending the same thing or more an 360 arcade is 199.99 pkus the tax which comes out to 217 plus 100 dollars more for the hardrive with tax so now you looking at 324 plus the play and charge kit thats 19.99 plus the tax 21.64 now 345.64 okay now you got to get the xbox live for a year 54.11 thats thats 399.75 plus so honestly there is no diffrence

Big dog... Microsoft gave different options to buy your console so different market sectors could enjoy the 360 OBVIOUSLY, the cheapest come with less and the most expensive with more...
Also OBVIOUSLY if you buy piece by piece the 360 it is going to sum a lot more than just buying the whole package, but that doesnt mean you are just going to do that. That´s if you want it but cant afford it completely well you have several options, which, if given certain time, will add up to be less expensive (guess you´ve missed a couple of economics class)
Also, with PS3 the free online gaming is awesome, the only down side to it, is that sometimes servers get satturated, and I wont like, so do XboxLIVE, but not as often because, well the money you are paying is for service, maintenance and that kind of stuff.
Graphically both consoles are in real terms.. the SAME.
A simple example of limited capabilties was G.R.A.W. on Xbox and PS2.. they where both completely different, and PS2 was simpler, with less detail and simpler animations, because the console couldn´t handle THAT PARTICULAR GAME.
Now, most games that come on both 360 and PS3 have the exact same gameplay, who cares if you can see a dot in a rock at full 1080p standing 1 inch from your 70" tv?? you´re gonna just pass by shooting or crashing something...
Get real!
A difference will come when either one console can run a game and the other wont. But as it has been seen for the loooong time both systems have been out, the only limitation is DVD and BluRay. And it´s said that xbox360 will deal with the game size issue by releasing 2 dvd´s games, and, with both systems with harddrives, that won´t be an issue, maybe a little message saying "please insert disk 2 to continue".. situation that has been around forever with PC games, and you don´t see PC gamers claiming that games should already come with an external Hard Drive just to save the process of changing discs..................

ok well first of all lets look at the tech side of things if you are going out to buy a game system and dont mind paying for online content and would like a better selection of games as a whole, than by all means get the 360 it is a superb gaming system and will give you years of fun. the comment made that sony is chasing the tail of microsoft is very funny concidering that the only hardware experence microsoft has is the xbox and there zune which are both outsorsed for there assembly if you open up a xbox system guess what you find, parts from sony. wow who is really chasing whos tail. i understand that everyone has there own opinion whith these things but when it comes down to it if you are a gamer and are trying to buy a great GAMING system than the xbox is for you , if you are into wanting a entire multimedia center for your home than the ps3 is it. i have a original 60gig system with backwards compat. that has been modded with a 320gig hard drive, it is networked to my personal pc so that i can access all my music , movies and pictures from the livingroom it is my dvd player and blueray player and also a security system concidering that i can use my psp to access the ps3 through the internet and look through the pseye i can see if my home is ok or what my dog has been doing or just freak my wife out by telling here what she is wearing from 900 miles away. the point is xbox users should not judge ps users and vice vercia we are all gamers i just think it sucks that sony and microsoft cant come to agreeence so that we can all play online togather

i own both and the ps3 is a great media centreand blu ray but for games is poor it lags on cod4and 5 match making is poor on the xbox360 the signal is shared on the ps3 the host always has a major advantage. there is no stats whats so ever if you have to finish the game for the info to be saved because your not going to final server all info is stored with xbox and is saved every 1/4 of a second the graphics are about the same but i would say nit picking though the ps3 is better. so the xbox360 is far better and thats with having to put every game on the harddrive to stop the nosie and the ps3 does look smart all views.
I own both a PS3 and a 360 honestly the PS3 does have better graphics but not on games that both the systems share of course, so theres no reason to compare like that.
Having said that, its not all about graphics. Yeah its nice but look at the Wii its leading both the 360 and PS3. Its graphics are maybe a little better than the PS2. But thats where i come to the point that its not about graphics at all its about games and gameplay. Graphics dont make u have more fun playing imo.
If your more of an online player and enjoy games online i'd say go for the 360. But if your not much into that but u do like to play online occasionally PS3.
Everyone talks about prices of the consoles personally I dont think theres much of a difference. Your gonna get what you pay for 360 wise dont buy the core cuz buying all the attachments is gonna run u up in price but pro or elite u can't go wrong. PS3 its expensive but if u research whats inside of it you'll realize that quite frankly your getting a pretty good deal. Notice Sony was talking about how they were going to stop making the PS3 because there losing so much money selling it at the price they are.
In the end there both great systems i happen to play my PS3 more but whichever way you decide to go you CAN'T go wrong. Of course people with one of the systems is gonna harrass the hell out of the one they dont have so if your looking at buying one ask someone with both. Because someone with 1 of the systems is gonna be biased either way.
I own a PS3 and I have a friend who owns an xbox 360. He is the type of guy who keeps insisting that he knows almost everything about graphics and says the 360 is on the cutting edge (I think it's because he hasn't played any other system besides 360). I'm not gonna pretend i know alot about this subject but i really don't see any difference. But while he keeps spending 8.00$ a month to brag about it, I'm sitting with PS3 counting my bills!! haha
The question for me is...over the long run, which is going to stay working the longest without needing to be replaced. Obviously, the amount of gameplay and usage and so on will affect this, but if all of these variables are the same, I would go with the one that won't break down two years after I buy it. Does anyone know about the longevity of either of these?
As for extras, ps3 has blu-ray and xbox doesn't...the only advantage there in my mind is if someone is in the market for a blu-ray and a console. Doesn't matter to me, and blu-ray prices are coming down and will continue to do so as time passes.

okay first 360 kicks ps3 ass anyday. we have halo3 which is maybe like the best damn game ever then we have gears of war (1 and 2) which is quite posibly the best game to be played on any consol and now were getting splitter cell conviction which um yeah we kick ass! ps3 does have it advances but we also have an ass kicking machine that can holld up to 100 GB um (couigh) ps3 only have 40.

I was in the market for a new console (PS3 or 360) a few years ago and I went with the PS3. I'm not going to argue graphics or amount of games or whatever, the thing that utterly made me spend 500 dollars for my 80GB backwards compatibility PS3 was the comparison of the failure rates of the systems. I found multiple articles about the 'red ring of death' and how the failure rate of the 360 was in some places up to 33 percent. I was 15 at the time I was buying the console and being that I don't come by a lot of money very often. I went with the PS3. I figured that for the extra 100 or so I'd rather buy a system with a less than 2 percent failure rate and keep my own console, rather than have to send it in for a few months and end up with a refurbished one that someone else might not have taken as good care of it. Also, I don't play online much, but I'm glad that the option's there for free if I want to use it. I really hate the fanboy wars though. I see both points, but don't see why it's worth arguing.
I'm looking to buy and have been meticulously researching both systems...I haven't made a decision...however Ps3 has 160gb vs xbox 120gb and that can easily be upgraded to 320gb by switching out the hard drive and replacing it with a laptop hard drive for less than $100..I'm 58 years old and have one of the first nintendos' and it's STILL working great...my grandkids play it every time they come over...so, reliability is very important to me and I don't online...so it's looking more and more like ps3 however my grandkids want me to get the xbox just for Gears of War..but not a good enough reason to sway me yet...lol...some on here seem to know what they're talking about , while others could obviously spend a lot more time learning the English language as well as how to spell...less time gaming and more time learning while you're young and have the opportunity...

the ps3 is clearly the best. i lucked out and got the 80gb metal gear solid bundle with 4usb slots and memory card slots. ive since upgraded to a 500gb hard drive. as for the hd dvd on xbox comparing to bluray, good luck finding new titles. bluray won, remember!? i think next im gonna split my hard drive in two and put windows vista on it. try doing that with the xbox!!!!!!!!!!
Forgot to mention that i am not biased. my brother in law has an xbox wich he trully loves. played with him hundreds of time and it didnt rub off on me. very happy with my ps3.
It is simple. Really simple... It depends..! You might not have enough money for PS3 straight away, you might like more PS3 games than Xbox 360 games and you also might not give a shit for it looking "pretty".
You can only judge which console is better when it comes down to the graphics.
From what I've seen and heard they are pretty much the same with each other. Everything else is just details and shit.

one reason i got a 360 instead of the the ps3 was the controller. im a 1st person shooter fan and the analogs on the 360 play so much better at an angle from each other than the ps3's on the same axis. Also i don't see the attraction with having a blu ray player. the films are stupid expensive and in a couple of years it will be be obsolite {as well as dvd} with everyone downloading movies to their tv/console/pc.
I am in the same boat as many of you asking which to buy. After reading through all the threads I think I have found my answer. I want a good solid machine that will entertain me. I too have read many articles on hardware issues with the XBox 360 (overheating, scratching etc) and that already has me running to the PS3. Besides, I have had hours of fun on my PS2 and judging by the games available for PS3 and the titles that are coming I think I will be fine. Knowing that I can go online to play when I want is a feature as well. One thing I notice with all the XBox fans and other commentors is that they keep referring back to "If you don't quite have enough money for PS3" this sounds as though if I do have the money then I should go for it. Priced out an XBox 60gb today and by the time I had to add on Live I was in the same price bracket. Thanks to this fowum I think I have finally made my decision.
PS3 is very useful not only for kids. Adults also very often play games just to relax after a hard day or just if they have vacation at home. It is really useful, because not everybody wants to play online games on his computer. Here are two reasons - we can get a virus and all our personal data can become public or will be destroyed. On the other hand not everybody has powerful PCs, which can allow them to play games on Blu-ray discs or just to watch Blu-ray movies. And now you can connect your PS3 to your huge plasma TV panel and to play wonderful games in high-definition or to watch your favorite films in Blu-ray quality. Despite all the negative reviews concerning this gaming console, the number of sold units is telling us that this is a good product.
PS3 is one of the consoles, which are part of the seventh generation of the video-gaming. PS3 has a processor from IBM. It allows PS3 to make more than three trillion calculations per second. Definitely, it's the best gaming console nowadays.

I think you failed. You completely glossed over the differences in features between Xbox Live and PSN.
Live:
-Cross game invites
-Cross game voice chat
-All online/leaderboard stats are kept on MS' servers
-Live is a 'secure' network - which cuts down extremely on hacking & cheating.
PSN:
-Has none of the features listed above & I experience SO many cheaters on PSN it isn't even funny. It makes some games unplayable online, since so many cheaters spoil it.
i currently don't own either system and don't really know how ps3's hold up in the long run as far as reliability goes, but i can provide this:
i used to have a roommate who was a HUGE 360 fanatic and he'd go on and on about the superior gameplay, graphics, and all the techy stuff that supposedly far and away outdid the ps3. but for whatever reason, he always had problems with it. for the 2 1/2 years we lived together, he must've gone through at least 4 different xbox 360 consoles. those "red lights of death" as he would put it, would appear almost like clockwork. however, when it was working, it was a great system.
I would like to give my opinion on both consoles:
360 - has better games than the ps3 same graphics, noisy, have to pay for xbox live but its miles better than playstation network
PS3 - has a blu-ray player and has all the same games as the 360 apart from Killzone, which is crap.
Conclusion
360 is a better console for gaming online. The ps3 is just good for blu-ray, but if you dont have a HD tv, you wont see the difference anyway.

By the way, I constantly play online on Call of Duty: World at War (which I'm 10th prestige rank 65) or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I have played both online on a PS3 and are exactly the same, apart from on 360 where you can talk to a maximum of 8 people at a time in a party, and the controller of the 360 is better to play first person shooters than a PS3 controller, because of the position of the left analogue stick. In the long run, the 360 will be better than the PS3, Blu-ray is crap, not as many films on it as DVD, also the 360 upgrades DVDs up to HD through HDMI anyway.
A PS3 connected to a Pioneer HDTV is a kick-ass experience. That's how I while away my extra but precious time.

now ima be honest here, from my personal experience, i personally prefer the ps3 because of the blu ray and to that fact that i dont have to pay for online, and i dont have to worry about it having to overheat, unlike my xbox(but eventually got another one, YAY!!) and thats just my opinion, and for those who like the 360, that perfectly fine with me, because if it was gaming alone, xbox clearly wins, and yes kiwi,xbox live is much much better, by a long shot than psn, but hey to me, its like having another bill just for entertainment. Overall, it doesnt matter what system you buy, but what games you buy, to me i just wanna have fun.

Guys, stay away from tv tuners! I just purchased a tv tuner card, thinking that I could hook up my xbox 360 with it, and record the gameplay on my computer. But the thing is, it did work, however I was getting a min 5 second delay between the time I move a button in the controller, to when I actually see the action on screen. So, the game was practically unplayable.
personally i prefer xbox 360. ps3 is a great console and depending on your opinion you might lik it more but at first sony did a terrible job of marketing the ps3, they were losing money. people say ps3 has better graphics but i've noticed a bigger difference between games than consoles. both are great and by the way suck my balls.
im sorry i have both, i only use my ps3 for movies. the online gaming on it is a fail. i use my 360 to play online

I do not have any of them, but I am surely going to buy either a PS3 or Xbox360. I have played the Wii a few times at my friend's house and I think its not very fun. I am a big PS supporter and i have a ps, psp, ps2.I realise that the xbox360 has many exclusive games, unlike PS3 and I like Forza Motorsport 3 which will be exclusive for Xbox360, so should i buy the Xbox360 insdtead of ps3?

a week later i sold my ps3 for a 360 and i have no regrets on my choice.

Hi everyone, just want to wade in and give some love to the gamers. First of all, I am a long time gamer, played the little galaxy alien game when first came out in late seventies, played both spectrum 48k and c64 mid to late eighties, amiga 500 early ninties. Later got a playstation and after the ps2. STILL got that wonderfull machine, my children use it now, going strong nine years later, also got my original playstation with final fantasys 3, 5, (imported) 7, 8, and 9. Decided to get a xbox 360 because ps3 was not out yet and as I said I have a family now. My point is this, on all the systems I owned or played I had fun and that is the bottom line for a gamer. Either system is fantastic, just enjoy. Sorry to bore you all with a history of gaming, but that history was fun. Just respect the guys and girls you are playing against.
